故事以第一人稱寫法拉開了序幕，Marie Tharps父親的工作是幫農人們看土地，工作時會在地圖上註記土地的土質以及這塊土地適合怎麼使用。收到父親工作的影響，Marie從小最喜歡看地圖，但她總有個不解的地方：地圖上陸地會有很多顏色的註記，而海卻是單調的一種藍色！這讓她產生很大的好奇，海裡，究竟是個什麼樣貌？Could sea floor ever be mapped？帶著這樣的疑惑長大學成後，她去應徵research ship上的工作，不服輸大眾認為女生只能做整理文件的工作，她利用soundings聲距測量的原理，沿著陸地邊緣往大海深處畫出海面下崎嶇的地形，她海地圖的繪製之後還證實了當時爭論不休的板塊漂移(continental drift)理論。
